The Magic City

Birmingham, long ago coined “The Magic City” is the county seat of Jefferson County and the largest city in Alabama.  From its founding just after the Civil War, through the cataclysmic civil rights struggle of the 60’s and the city’s subsequent rebirth, Birmingham has a long, rich history.  Birmingham Alabama

For many years the steel industry played a crucial role in Birmingham’s local economy. Red Mountain and the surrounding hills of central Alabama offered a never ending supply of ingredients for iron making and helped to shape the city into one of the leading steel centers in the United States. While steel production continues to play a substantial role in Birmingham’s economy, the city has experienced huge financial results in recent decades from investments in bio-technology and medical research, banking and insurance, and engineering and construction.

Today, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and its adjacent hospital continues the quest for medical research while providing Level 1 trauma center healthcare.  UAB now employs close to 19,000 people which makes it the second largest employer in the state (after the RSA military facility near Huntsville).   The city also enjoys its reputation as a major banking center, is home to four major insurance companies and several design and international construction firms.

With a population of more than 212,000, Birmingham is made up of many neighborhoods and surrounding suburbs.  With competitive salaries and a relatively low cost of living, the metropolitan area has consistently been rated as one of America's best places to live and work while building personal net worth.  The area is also reputed to be the home of some of the best high schools, colleges, and universities in the country.

The metropolitan area offers a huge number of dining choices with enough traditional and ethnic restaurants to satisfy every taste and budget.   Residents and visitors alike will also enjoy the huge variety of attractions and activities in the Birmingham area.  Among the many entertainment choices are a number of early landmarks and historic sites,  museums, zoos and aquariums, parks and gardens, amusement parks and arcades, arts and the theater, wineries and breweries, and a myriad of sports, golf and outdoor activities.  Birmingham also offers dozens of places to hike, most within an hour’s drive or less.
